Ordering the wrong size garage door is more common than you might think.and it's an expensive mistake. Step-by-Step Measurement Guide

1. Width of the Opening

Measure the width at the widest point of the opening, from the inside edge of one side jamb to the other. This is the most critical measurement. Take measurements at both the top and bottom of the opening.if they differ by more than 1/2 inch, note the larger measurement and inform your installer.

2. Height of the Opening

Measure from the floor to the bottom of the header (the horizontal beam above the door opening). Take measurements on both sides of the opening. If your garage floor slopes (common for drainage), note this as it may affect installation.

3. Headroom

This is the space between the top of the door opening and the ceiling or any obstructions like beams or lights. Most standard garage doors require at least 12 inches of headroom. Low-headroom hardware is available if you have limited space, but this should be discussed with your installer.

4. Side Room

Measure the distance from the side of the door opening to the nearest wall or obstruction on each side. Most track systems need at least 3.75 inches on each side. If space is limited, we can recommend alternative track configurations.

5. Backroom (Depth)

Measure the depth of the garage from the door opening to the back wall. The door needs enough space to fully open without hitting anything.typically the door height plus 18 inches for standard extension springs, or less with torsion springs mounted above the door.

Common Garage Door Sizes

Standard residential garage door sizes include:

Single-car doors: 8x7, 9x7, 10x7 feet (width x height)
Double-car doors: 16x7, 16x8, 18x7 feet
RV or oversized: 10x8, 12x8, or custom sizes
